Breaking the ice and getting new teams off to a good start

Kicking off a new project, or welcoming a crowd of new colleagues, is often exciting and there is a temptation to dive straight into the work. Taking a bit of time to check there is a shared understanding of what you need to achieve as a team, and exploring how best to work together provides a strong foundation to positive, effective working relationships.

A Team Canvas or charter can be a great place to start, as can non-cringeworthy ice-breakers to get to know people beyond their job title.  Being more aware of individual goals as well as team objectives can make it easier to support each other and share relevant opportunities and contacts.

“Lara is a facilitator for UKRI’s Future Leader Fellowship Scheme and worked with one of their Fellows on a research team away day. One of the participants had this to say: “Thank you so much for a very nice and successful Away Day event yesterday, and for having been such an awesome facilitator! The programme was very useful for the team and project, and we really had a wonderful time!”
